Congresswoman Hahn Celebrates Federal Funding for Breakwater Repairs

San Pedro, CA—Today, Congresswoman Janice Hahn (CA-44) celebrated an announcement from the Army Corps of Engineers that the damaged federal breakwater protecting the Port of Los Angeles will be fixed.

“This is a huge relief,” said Congresswoman Hahn. “I have been fighting for repairs to our breakwater for some time now and I am happy that the Army Corps recognized their importance.”

Congresswoman Hahn was informed of significant damage to the San Pedro Breakwater when she requested information from the Army Corps on El Niño preparations. The Army Corps identified four areas of major damage and twelve areas of significant damage along the breakwater. The damage makes the breakwater vulnerable to a breach and could cause a shutdown of the Port of Los Angeles. Since then Congresswoman Hahn has called on the Army Corps to dedicate federal funding to repairing the damage, toured the breakwater to see the damage in person, and has had numerous meetings and calls with Army Corps officials about this issue.

The Army Corps of Engineers announced today that $14 million in federal funding would be dedicated to making repairs to the San Pedro and Long Beach breakwaters.

“The Port of Los Angeles continues to be the economic lifeblood of our region and workers and businesses across Southern California count on it staying open,” continued Congresswoman Hahn.
